Explore the Ancient Art of Painting with Melted Beeswax and Tree Resin
October 17th | Saturday | 10am-3pm
November 7th | Saturday | 10am-3pm
Unleash your creativity in an inspiring setting during this one-day encaustic painting workshop, held in my studio on the shores of Flowing Lake.
Open to all experience levels, this hands-on workshop is designed for both complete beginners and artists who would like to expand their knowledge of encaustic painting.
Encaustic is an ancient painting technique using heated beeswax, tree resin, and pigment to create artwork with extraordinary depth, texture, translucency, and luminous color.
We'll begin with a demonstration of the materials, tools, techniques, and best practices for safely working with encaustic. Then you'll dive in and begin painting with richly pigmented melted wax.
During the workshop, you'll learn how to:
-
Prepare your painting surface
-
Safely melt and work with encaustic medium
-
Apply and fuse multiple layers of wax
-
Create both smooth and textured surfaces
-
Work with pigmented encaustic colors
-
Incorporate Pastels into the wax surface
-
Scratch and carve into the surface using sgraffito techniques
-
Build translucent layers that create depth, history, and visual interest
-
Experiment with a variety of marks, textures, and surface treatments
We will use butane torches to fuse the layers of wax, so participants must be 18 years of age or older.
All materials are provided—just bring your creativity and come ready to experiment and have fun with wax.
You'll leave the workshop with two completed studies/artworks and a strong foundation for continuing your encaustic practice.
